Queen Elizabeth II Dies At Age 96 After 70 Years Reign
Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Head of the Commonwealth, and Head of State for the United Kingdom has died today, aged 96. Her Majesty passed away today, at her Balmoral Estate in Scotland, according to a statement from The Royal Family.
The Royal Family Tweeted:
Born Princess Elizabeth of York on April 21st, 1926, Elizabeth would go on to become the longest-reigning, longest-serving British monarch in British history- with a reign lasting 77 years. Married to Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1947, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II upon her accession in 1952 and a fixture of British life upon her widely-televised and watched coronation in 1956.
With a reign surpassing that of Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II lived a long and remarkable life- having lived through the Second World War as a princess, and subsequently lived through the premierships of 15 Prime Ministers (her first being Winston Churchill) and 13 United States presidents. The Queen leaves behind an extended family, many corgis, and a large, albeit mostly symbolic, role for her successor and son, Prince Charles, to fill. Official plans dictate a period of mourning and likely a state funeral and procession for the monarch in the coming weeks.
