Peter Safran Stands By Cancelling ‘Batgirl’ Claiming The Film Would’ve Hurt DC
Peter Safran has come out against #ReleaseBatgirl fandoms and said that the movie just wasn’t good enough for release. Safran hasn’t pulled his punches suggesting ‘it would have hurt DC’ to release to the masses. Safran firmly believes it was a braver decision to cancel the film than to allow subpar content to damage the DC brand.
This directly contradicts interviews with some of the cast. In an interview with Variety, Brendan Fraser said ‘everything that Adil and Bilall shot felt real and exciting.’ Michael Keaton called it a ‘business decision’ rather than disparaging the film. Leslie Grace, the would-be star, seemed particularly wounded and leaked Batgirl behind-the-scenes footage on her Instagram feed.

Warner Bros has done its best to ensure that Batgirl does not follow The Snyder Cut and has even scrubbed it from the servers to prevent it from escaping onto the internet. This could be another move to make sure fans know there are no plans for Batgirl to resurface.
There was a wave of cancellations from DC last year, and female and POC-led projects took the brunt of the damage. And although, in the words of Michael Keaton, it may be ’a business decision’, DC seems to be selective about what they think will hit their bottom line. Aquaman 2 and Amber Heard’s appearance have escaped the chopping block, as has The Flash with its star who recently narrowly avoided jail time. Fans who argue that this will hurt DC more than a mediocre (if that was the case) Batgirl may have a point.
