Steven Spielberg’s latest film, The Fabelmans, has been nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay. It is Spielberg’s first nomination in that category. The film tells the semiautobiographical story of Spielberg’s childhood and how he fell in love with movies. This is done through the eyes of the protagonist Sammy Fabelman, played by Gabriel LaBelle.

Spielberg was overjoyed about the nomination:

“I just recently turned 76, where they say, ‘What’s left to accomplish?’ I suddenly get nominated for the first time in my career by the Academy as a co-author of best screenplay — it made me feel like all those English and creative writing classes paid off!”

Tony Kushner, the screenwriter for Lincoln, had asked Spielberg to start recording his memories. It was a slow process, though, as pointed out by Spielberg:

“I had to be ready to tell the story and I wasn’t for a long time and for a lot of reasons.”

However, The Fabelmans did not do well at the box office, making only $15 million domestically and $21.6 million worldwide. Spielberg attributed the numbers to the pandemic, saying that a lot of adult moviegoers have switched to watching at home. There just isn’t a big market for adult dramas at the moment. However, Spielberg is optimistic about the future. He thinks that in time, cinemas will come back because people crave the opportunity to be social.

In the same conversation, Spielberg also talked about other Oscar nominations. He is happy that hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water are nominated for Best Picture after the Academy expanded the Best Picture category to ten nominees. As someone who has made his share of blockbusters, he is glad the Academy is finally starting to recognize them:

“[Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight] would have definitely garnered a Best Picture Nomination today, so having these two blockbusters solidly presented on the top 10 list is something we should all be celebrating.”

He also mentioned that he is only “peripherally involved” in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and that he trusts James Mangold with the property.

The 2023 Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 12.
