Patrick Wilson sat down recently with Cinema Blend’s Sean O’Connell on the ReelBlend podcast to promote Insidious: The Red Door when he was asked if he thought Watchmen might be perceived differently if it were to hit theaters in today’s market as opposed to when it originally came out. Wilson said, “Watchmen might be – I would probably put a large amount of money on this – the only movie of mine that I have watched front to back since a premiere. As a filmmaker, as someone who, I've heard this for years, and I don't disagree. It's a weird thing to say. It's before it's time.”

The performer-turned-filmmaker echoed the podcast host’s opinion of Zack Synder in that he was ahead of his time with what he did in Watchmen. Watchmen came out in 2009 before Marvel Studios was the household name they are now, with an uncharacteristic for superhero flicks R rating to boot. With Marvel’s success in embracing antiheroes such as  Deadpool into the MCU with open arms, complete with the R rating, it is entirely possible that Watchmen if released today would be perceived quite differently. By the way, fans can stream Watchmen on HBO Max as well as the follow-up Watchmen series. Patrick Wilson fans can catch Insidious: The Red Door in theaters now.
