'Oppenheimer' Will Receive A Theatrical Release In Japan

We have just received confirmation that Oppeheimer is to be released in Japan. Local distributor Bitter End is taking this film about nuclear bombs into theaters, with no release date announced. Given the subject’s controversial history in Japan, it was assumed that no distributor would want to touch the film, especially in light of the #NoBarbenheimer trend in backlash to a mashup of the two films.

Warner Bros. of Japan was forced to apologize after this little mishap, but it seems as though someone thinks it can work, as it has licensed the Universal film.

Oppenheimer is the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, who oversaw the Manhattan Project and developed the Atomic Bombs that were used on the Japanese cities of Hirosaki and Nagasaki. It was released this summer into theaters by Universal Pictures, on the same day Warner Brothers released their Barbie film.

Bitter End has stated that their decision to release the film came, “following months of thoughtful dialogue associated with the subject matter and acknowledging the particular sensitivity for us Japanese.” They also replied that director Christopher Nolan has, “created a singular cinematic experience that transcends traditional storytelling and must be seen on the big screen. We invite the audience to watch the film with their own eyes when it comes to Japan.”
