New Live-Action ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Series Coming To Netflix Will Include New Canon Material
While we still don’t have a trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation, news involving the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe continues to drop. Recently there was a confirmation that the Zuko movie will be the second of the three animated movies the new Avatar Studios is producing and that Dante Basco will reprise his role for the adult Gaang movie.
Now, word about the live-action film has come out, and it should be good news to fans worried about canon and faithfulness. Avatar News claims they have confirmed that Avatar Studios, founded by the original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, is still working closely with Netflix on their live-action adaptation.

This comes as a shock and perhaps some relief, given that one of the biggest news bits to come out about the live-action adaptation was the departure of Konietzko and DiMartino from the project a few years ago. Fans were distraught at the news, leading to widespread speculation that the series would suffer as a result.
Avatar News’ new reporting throws that into contention. According to Avatar News, and independently confirmed, Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon are listed along with Netflix and Rideback as production companies on IMDb. Additionally, Avatar News confirms that Paramount is including the live-action adaptation as part of their slate, just not part of the animated slate they recently released.
They are also claiming that the rights the show owns include not just the animated canon but also the expanded universe canon. That means comic books and novels. Avatar News mentions they know of some exciting things Netflix is doing to incorporate Avatar Kuruk’s past into the show. Avatar Kuruk is the Avatar to have come before Avatar Kyoshi several hundred years prior to Aang’s birth. The news outlet claims that these canonical points are in the script and the cast and crew know about it. They’re also stating that the new symbols for the four elements that Avatar Studios released are being used by the live-action adaptation.
The significant part of the news release was that Avatar News has confirmation of information that makes all of this legit. They claim that new canon that has been developed by Avatar Studios that, at the time of the live-action’s writing and filming, was not public knowledge yet, is included in the show. Filming began in November and December of 2021, and apparently, a specific piece of canon that wasn’t due to release until 2022 was included in the show.
It’s big news for fans of the ATLA universe who felt the live-action show would not be as strong as it could have been when Konietzko and DiMartino left. This news, if Avatar News is accurate, and it has been in the past, paints a promising picture of the upcoming Netflix adaptation of the beloved show.
Though there is no confirmed date for the show, there is a rumor circulating on Twitter that the show will debut this summer. This has yet to be confirmed, but Avatar News claims this aligns with their projections. If this is true, a trailer should be forthcoming soon.
