Julia Louis-Dreyfus Will Shoot Scenes For Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' Over The Summer
Who is getting excited for Marvel’s Phase 5 to begin? One character has garnered much speculation as hints of the assembling of a supervillain/antihero version of the Avengers have been discreetly hinted upon throughout Phase 4. Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine or just simply “Val,” played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been seen in credit scenes and cameos in both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as she swopped into the aid and then the recruitment of John Walker otherwise known as U.S. Agent and Black Widow as she approached Natasha Romanoff’s sister, Yelena Belova. Audiences learn at that time that Yelena works for Val as she is on holiday visiting Nat’s grave when Val shows up to give her an assignment. Val was seen most recently in the 2022 blockbuster film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Louis-Dreyfus had a slightly more significant role in the most recent installment of Black Panther as fans learned that Val is the new director of the CIA. Director, Ryan Coogler recently discussed however that this role was cut back to allow for the storyline to focus more on the death of King T’challa, played by the late Chadwick Boseman. Louis-Dreyfus confirmed this information in her interview with Variety. As filming is expected to begin this summer on Thunderbolts, fans will learn more about Val with time. After all, Marvel Producer, Nate Moore teased last summer that the headstrong team of antiheroes ultimately answer to this petite lady; suggesting perhaps that when the need arises Val can throw down with the best of them. Interestingly, Julia Louis-Dreyfus admitted in her interview with Variety that she pitched the idea to the powers that be; suggesting Val get in on the action saying “ I told them I really, really want to fight. We’ll see if that happens. I haven’t seen the script yet.”

Marvel is known for being tightlipped around their plans, but this is what we know so far: Julia Louis-Dreyfus will begin filming scenes for Thunderbolts this summer. The Contessa often seems to show up in the wake of incidents that involve enhanced individuals, international incidents specifically. Her leadership will likely be comparable to that of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Joining her team alongside U.S. Agent and Yelena Bolova will be Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Antonia Dreykov a.k.a. Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ava Starr a.k.a. Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).
Val and the rest of the Thunderbolts are expected to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. Fans may learn new details in the upcoming months as this exciting phase begins to unfold.
