Netflix Releases First Look For 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Revival
The day has finally arrived. Today, the world got its first actual look at the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. Sort of.
Netflix is currently hosting its Tudum convention in Brazil, highlighting the big projects coming to the streamer this year and beyond. Yesterday, the big four of the cast, Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio Tarbell (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), and Dallas James Liu (Zuko, took to the stage to talk and answer questions. Some of the biggest features today were Cobra Kai and, of course, a first look at Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Fans were undoubtedly looking forward to a trailer after a long production (It was first announced in September of 2018). Unfortunately, they’ll have to wait a while longer. Instead, what Netflix has provided were actual screenshots of the big four and a sort of hype trailer.

The shots are likely from the first episode or so since the show is supposed to follow the animated series closely, and the first few episodes took place at the Southern Water Tribe. You know, the South Pole. There’s lots of snow. In the shot of Aang, you can see the Southern Water Tribe’s homes in the background, accented with what looks like hides and wooden framing. There is also what looks to be a weapon rack, which likely holds Sokka’s weapons. And one can’t ignore the impressive detail of Aang’s Air Nomad tattoos.
Speaking of Sokka, we can see his tell-tale top knot, shell necklace, and of course, his boomerang. He also looks to be standing before a wall of whale bones and hide, a look of determination on his face, as he has taken the defense of the tribe’s home in his father’s absence.
Fans were also greeted with a look at Katara, complete with her “hair loopies,” playing with what looks to be a bit of water. She must be practicing her bending. Her costume, like Sokka’s, is far more embellished than her animated counterpart’s. Then there’s Prince Zuko, clearly identified by the scar around his eye, and he’s decked out in his Fire Nation armor. It’s well made, complete with pointed curves that resemble the fire that his nation is known for.
In all, it’s certainly a welcome glance at what is going to come in 2024, but as the video shows, there’s no actual footage. It’s just a repeating series of the four nations’ symbols, ending in the vague date of next year sometime. Perhaps as convention season rolls on, they’ll reveal more, but for now, it’s not much to go on, and it likely only makes excited fans more so.
