After A 7 Year Delay, Carrie Fisher's Final Movie Will Be Released June 2023
Fans of Star Wars, or more specifically, fans of actress Carrie Fisher might be forgiven for thinking that The Last Jedi was Carrie Fisher’s final film before her untimely death in December 2016, but, as it turns out, she had one more film credit to her name (exempting her digitally produced appearances in Rogue One and The Rise of Skywalker). Indeed, Fisher finished one final film, Wonderwell, before she passed away. However, for various reasons, the film has spent seven years in limbo and will not see a release until the end of this month, June 2023.
In addition to Fisher, Wonderwell also stars Rita Ora, Nell Tiger Free, Sebastian Croft, and Kiera Milward and is the directorial debut of Vlad Marsavin. According to the synopsis provided on IMDB.com, Wonderwell is described as: “A coming-of-age fairy tale set between modern-day Italy and an imaginary realm just beyond, Wonderwell follows Violet (Milward), a naive and inquisitive 12 year-old-girl, on a thrilling journey that transforms her world forever.”

Marsavin chalked the film’s lengthy seven-year delay up to various issues, including finishing the extensive visual effects needed for the movie, COVID lockdowns, and, most importantly, Fisher’s passing. However, Marsavin is eager to finally share his film with the world, stating that “Now is the perfect time to share her (Fisher’s) magical on-screen moments as Hazel." The rights to the movie were acquired by Vertical, and they reached a distribution deal with AMC for a limited theatrical run beginning June 23, 2023, followed by a debut on digital on-demand streaming platforms.
While the movie’s release may bring back painful memories of Fisher’s abrupt passing in 2016 for some, it will hopefully give her fans yet another reminder of everything that made her such a beloved actress.
