The days of sharing Netflix passwords as a love language are becoming a thing of the past.  This week, Netflix announced their launch of Profile Transfer, a new feature that will allow users who have been signing on with some else’s account to set up their own paid membership.

Reports of Netflix beginning to crack down on sharing passwords started to emerge this past spring.  As Netflix’s budget for content production grows and their subscriber count declines, the company has been looking for new ways to increase revenue.   This update comes after a similar feature was released in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru last March.

REALTED:

Profile Transfer, a feature Netflix claims has been “much requested”, will allow users who have been utilizing another subscriber’s password to set up their own accounts more easily.  New subscribers will be able to transfer their personalized viewing data, such as recommendations, viewing history, lists, saved items, and other settings, to their new profile.

The steps for utilizing Profile Transfer are outlined clearly on the site.  To access Profile Transfer, hover over the profile icon of the user who is setting up a new account and select “Profile Transfer” from the dropdown menu.

Using Profile Transfer instead of starting a new account from scratch might ease the blow of finally having to pay for one’s own Netflix account.  You may lose free access to your parent’s Netflix, but at least you will never lose your spot in The Great British Baking Show.
