After the last Mortal Kombat, the developers have decided that the twelfth main installment will reset the universe. Once Liu Kang was mortal, now they are a fully-fledged god of fire. On becoming the god of fire, he took it upon himself to reroll the realm. Liu Kang had hoped for the universe to have a chance at doing better if a second chance was provided. According to co-creator Ed Boon, they decided not to introduce new characters “since fans were eager to see the return of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, and Liu Kang. So we felt like telling a new story with existing characters was the strongest way to go.”

In Mortal Kombat 1, a new feature called Kameos will be introduced. Once the player has selected their character, they can then choose a guest fighter to offer support during the fight. There are also Kameo throws and fatalities. This allows the Kameos to add more versatility and flexibility to a player’s style of gameplay. However, players can’t choose to be a Kameo character. Main characters and Kameo characters are broken up into two separate selection screens.

The development team has decided to change the plot and revamp the characters for the 2023 reboot. This means fan favorites like Sub-Zero and Scorpion are back. This time around, Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Smoke are siblings. Although not bound by blood but their brotherhood will take them far.

Co-creator Ed Cooper delves into why changes to characters were made, “And so with that Big Bang, we're noticing a lot of the same characters, but they're going to be reintroduced with brand-new identities, backstories, roles, and relationships with each other. And that is basically the premise that it's a brand-new story using characters that you already know and love, but in a completely different scenario.”

In the future, players can look forward to seeing their iconic characters in new and exciting storylines.
