Hollywood Actors Begin Strike Prep Before Talks Finish
Having previously extended their talks with the AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA members are preparing for the July 12 deadline should strike action need to occur. Planning regarding picket locations and the signs they will use at them is in the works, with captains and coordinators being chosen.
The Writers Guild of America members who have been striking have chosen well in their captains and coordinators, with them organising the locations across both New York City and Los Angeles. Some of them have offered to help SAG-AFTRA members in organising their strikes should the need arise. The Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA members are expected to merge their members into a more powerful strike force should a deal for the latter not be agreed.

Some among both unions feel the leadership of SAG-AFTRA will close a deal that doesn’t fix all the issues they have. A source from the WGA, speaking to Deadline, said, “We’re hoping – for the sake of their membership – that this time, their leadership will be aware of the moment at hand. The last things any union in the country wants to be now are the DGA.” The Directors Guild of America secured a deal last month that provided significant gains for their members, but some feel the leadership didn’t do enough.
That same source talked about welcoming the SAG-AFTRA members to the picket lines and how this would be a historic moment. “The writers have gone it alone on 7 out of 8 strikes and won each of them. We’ll get the deal we need this time as well, but we would welcome them on the line. The actors joining us would be as historic as in 1960, when concurrent strikes gave us health care and our pension. The WGA has long known that the studios give up nothing without a fight, which means walking, and it appears the SAG-AFTRA membership does now as well. The membership seems ready to walk the line.”
