At a time when Marvel is exploring diversity with teenage heroes, a lesser-known release has gone under the radar, despite having a lot to offer audiences. The animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was released on the 10th of this month, which is also black history month. The series is based on the character of Moon Girl, voiced by actress Diamond White.

For those unaware, Moon Girl is 13-year-old Lunella Lafayette, a remarkably intelligent girl of African American descent who accidentally transports a red t-rex into her home in lower east-side New York. The dinosaur imprints on her, she names it “Devil Dinosaur”, and the two fight villains together, protecting her neighborhood.

“I wish I had a show like this growing up, because then maybe I would've been a little bit smarter,” White said about the series, pointing out the show’s focus on quantum physics. “It's cool just to see all the different flavors of the show. It's really an all-inclusive show. It's really beautiful."

The actress pointed out the significance her character might have on younger viewers. "It teaches you a lot about quantum physics,” She said, "But I try not to think about it too hard, because, at the end of the day, she is just a 13-year-old girl. It's important to have her resonate in that."

The first season of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is currently streaming on Disney+ and has been renewed for a second season.
