The trailer for Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* movie was leaked last week. Before being taken down, it generated extensive excitement as fans took to the internet to break down the plot, villain, and costume design. It has come to light that the trailer was not officially released at D23, as previously reported. Instead, it was shown at San Diego Comic-Con with a seemingly positive response from fans.

Here is what we know at this point: The film is in post-production and is expected to hit theaters next summer. The short synopsis on IMDb states that the film will center on “a group of supervillains [who] are recruited to go on missions for the government.”  In previous MCU projects, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s CIA Director, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, has been set up to be the handler for this MCU version of Suicide Squad.

Through both film and Disney+ projects since End Game, Marvel Studios has taken the time to introduce the members of this team to acquaint fans with the main characters leading up to their debut as a working unit. The film was written by Kurt Busiek, Joanna Calo, and Lee Sung Jin. It was directed by Jake Schreier.

The cast includes Florence Pugh as ex-Black Widow turned contract assassin, Yelena Belova, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr (aka Ghost), David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov (aka Red Guardian), Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov (aka Taskmaster), Wyatt Russell as John Walker (aka U.S. Agent), and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. The trailer introduced Lewis Pullan as Robert Reynolds, also known as Sentry. Sentry is likely the big bad of the film.

There has been much speculation about how the final product will turn out, including the film's title. CBM suggests that the asterisk currently sitting on Thunderbolts* could indicate a name change, with a popular theory being Dark Avengers. Of course, at this stage, that is all just speculation. The good news is that details should emerge soon with an expected theatrical release set for May 2, 2025.
