'Looney Tunes' Never Die: New Movie 'The Day The Earth Blew Up' Coming From Warner Bros.

The Looney Tunes are back in action! A new film has been announced by Warner Bros that sets a surprising precedent for the long-running cartoon franchise. The new film is called “The Day The Earth Blew Up” and it is the first theatrical Looney Tunes film to be fully animated.

The film is a buddy comedy starring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, who find themselves as Earth’s last hope amidst an alien invasion.

Despite a multitude of theatrical feature films dating back to 1996 with Space Jam starring Michael Jordan, the Looney Tunes have never had a theatrical film be entirely animated in 2D, with films such as Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action having live-action characters or settings combined with hand-drawn animation with the Looney Tunes characters. This would be taken a step further with the 2021 film “Space Jam: A New Legacy” which added CGI to the 2D-Live Action mix with the Looney Tunes entering the third dimension for the final act of the film. Up until this point it was never expected for a fully animated Looney Tunes film to hit theaters, which is what makes the reveal of ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up’ much more surprising.

The Day The Earth Blew Up came about as a result of a partnership between Warner Bros and GFM Animation, an independent studio which is said to be handling distribution of the film. GFM Chairman Guy Collins said in an interview with Variety

“It’s thrilling for the team here at GFM Animation to be handling the worldwide distribution sales on a movie with such an iconic IP, working with the terrific team at Warner Bros. Animation. It is great to see all their hard work in progress at this advanced stage of production. Independents rarely get to work on movies with such affinity awareness from fans worldwide and we know they are going to love Porky and Daffy’s sci-fi adventure just as much as we do.”

The Day The Earth Blew Up is directed by Pete Browngardt, who served as a creative director and executive producer on Looney Tunes Cartoons. Joining him are Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) as an executive producer and Alex Kirwan (Looney Tunes Cartoons) as a supervising producer. The film is set to launch next month at the American Film Market, and will release theatrically sometime next year.
