'Harry Potter' Director Reveals That Development On 'Fantastic Beasts' Franchise Is Stalled
Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly shelved the whole Fantastic Beasts franchise. David Yates, the director of the Harry Potter prequels, discussed the films in a recent podcast. “With Beasts, it's all just parked. We made those three movies, the last one through a pandemic, and it was enormous fun but it was tough”
The last film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore took half the box office of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Warner Bros have been ruthless with their cuts of late, the most famous of which was the completed Batgirl Movie. A $400 million drop in earnings was more than enough for Warner to axe Eddie Redmayne’s remaining two films. That’s without the bad reviews and the controversies surrounding Ezra Miller. After his other movie, The Flash lost 200 million, it might have been a convenient excuse for the studio to break ties.

But Yates doesn’t believe that it’s the end for Fantastic Beasts. “I’m sure at some point, we’ll be back. But yeah, I haven’t spoken to Jo, I haven’t spoken to David Heyman, I haven’t spoken to Warner Bros; we’re just taking a pause. It’s quite nice.”
But Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav may not agree. At a Goldman Sachs conference in September, just after the announcement of the Harry Potter reboot, Zaslav ignored the whole FB series stating, “We haven’t done anything with Harry Potter for more than a decade.” It’ll be interesting to see if any of the events from Fantastic Beasts are referenced in the new show.
