It’s no big secret that the age of the superhero movie is winding down fast. What once was a guaranteed near-billion-dollar film industry has seen flop after flop, especially the ones coming from Disney. Something needs to fill that void and we might be getting it from the most unlikely source.

Video game movies have famously been terrible. Until recently, only a handful have had anything resembling a positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. They weren’t big in the box office either. Then that started to change. The receptions to the Sonic and Detective Pikachu movies were generally positive. That was just a precursor to the mega-hit that was the Super Mario Bros. movie which was one of the very few billion-dollar movies in the last few years. Following that, the long-awaited Five Nights at Freddy’s film was a smash hit as well. So far video game movies are in, and there’s no reason to think the trend will slow down.

That brings us to the next video game movie on the docket. Continuing to ride the Five Nights at Freddy’s train, a movie adaptation of yet another indie horror game, Poppy’s Playtime is in the works from Legendary Studios. The game centers around a former employee of a toy company being lured to an abandoned factory and needing to use his wits to survive when he’s trapped and it turns out the toys are alive, is a perfect story for a movie. Plus, horror movies are generally fairly cheap to make, so while Poppy’s Playtime never reached the culture-shifting heights of FNAF, it does have its audience, and will most likely make back its budget and then some.

The video game movie craze is unlikely to reach the same success as the superhero one but it does seem to be ramping up. Poppy’s Playtime will soon be added to that list.
