The production company behind Godzilla vs. Kong has entered a multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership with Sony Pictures.

Having cut ties with Warner Bros. over disputes relating to the lack of communication over their 2021 films arriving on streaming platforms on the same date as their theatrical release, this new deal with Sony Pictures sees both committed to theatrical releases first for all major films.

Presidents of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, Josh Greenstein and Sandford Panitch, said of the deal,

“It’s a rare opportunity to partner in this mutually beneficial way with true pros, who are completely aligned in our theatrical commitment and vision for this business. The creative brilliance and power of Legendary is huge, and we look forward to bringing their work to theatres across the world.”

Sony Pictures will market and distribute all of Legendary’s upcoming theatrical releases, except for select current projects, which Warner Bros. still controls. Those projects include Dune: Part Two, which is set for release on 3 November 2023. Among those Sony will distribute are The Toxic Avenger and Brothers, both of which will also release next year. Previous films of the Legendary-Warner Bros. deal include 2021’s Dune and 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
