Kadokawa Corporation Acquires Acquire, Studio Behind 'Octopath Traveler'
If you haven’t had the chance to play Octopath Traveler or it’s recent sequel, Octopath Traveler II, you should definitely take the opportunity. It’s a well-reviewed JRPG that was released in 2018 on the Nintendo Switch (the sequel came out in 2023). The game is labeled as a 2D-HD game, reimagining the old 2D RPGs of the past and bridging them with 3D worlds and movement.
The same can be said for Elden Ring, at least in the review aspect. FromSoftware’s 2022 hit soulslike won Game of the Year at the Game Awards in 2023. Now, their parent company, Kadokawa, has purchased Octopath Traveler’s studio, Acquire. In their latest earnings call it was revealed that they had made it a “wholly owned subsidiary.” Acquire is not only known for Octopath Traveler, but also for games like Akiba’s Beat and No Heroes Allowed VR.

Kadokawa talked about synergies with the brands and studios it owns, likely referring to efficiency more than bringing content from one game into another. Bringing smaller studios under the management of larger ones can produce an environment of efficiency and productivity, if handled well. They also merge teams that can bring talent from other games into the development of others. Take the Elden Ring expansion, for example: many are eagerly awaiting word on it. Perhaps this is a sign of good things to come.
