Ever since Star Trek: Picard aired its third and final season this past April, discussions have spawned about another send-off for Star Trek: The Next Generation characters, or even their own ‘next generation.’ While talks about any future productions screeched to a halt with the WGA strike, which started about two weeks after the Picard finale, a bit more has come to light since the strike ended. In an interview for Star Trek Explorer magazine, Star Trek alum Jonathan Frakes has chimed in to express hopes about directing a potential Star Trek: Legacy series. Frakes has already directed for Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in just the past few years, so this transition would be a perfect next step for the franchise.

Patrick Stewart noted in his memoir Making It So that he would like to see a spinoff come to life – "I've discussed this with Jonathan, Brent [Spiner], and LeVar [Burton], and they are all game. Jonathan is my first choice to direct it." However, Stewart commented that he would rather see the stories established in Picard continue to capture audiences as a standalone movie rather than as a show. Picard showrunner Terry Matalas has previously commented on the possibility of a show like Legacy, though he has reiterated that there is not any such project officially in the works.

Jonathan Frakes has mentioned in prior interviews that he would like to be in a producing director role for future Star Trek productions with Matalas as executive producer. Frakes has explained that his favorite outlook for this prospective Legacy series would be to follow the children of The Next Generation crew. Some of these characters have already been established in Picard and he would love to see those actors reprise their roles. Picard season one saw Lulu Wilson as Will Riker and Deanna Troi’s daughter, Kestra, while season three introduced Geordi La Forge’s daughters, Alandra and Sidney, played by Mica Burton and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut. Frakes revealed that “it just feels like it’s laid out there [as] the blueprint for the next phase” of Star Trek.
