James Gunn Confirms 'Superman: Legacy' As First DCU Movie And Establishes 'Blue Beetle' As The First DCU Superhero
The mastermind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, and now the CEO of DC Films, revealed some compelling details about the new DC Films universe during an interview in the "Inside of You Podcast" with Michael Rosenbaum. While explaining the difference between working in the MCU and the renewed DCU he took control over on November 1, 2022, Gunn stated, “The first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle, and the first full DC movie is Superman.”
Blue Beetle will premiere on August 18, 2023. It follows the story of Jaime Reyes as he faces his new destiny after an ancient relic chooses him to be its host and grants him powers. As Gunn mentioned, this will be the first character of the new DCU. This statement has remarkable transcendence for the future of the franchise. Jaime Reyes is a kid from México, making him one of the few superheroes with a solo movie. This take certainly will have a positive impact on the diversity and protagonism of non-white characters.

Being the first character is a huge responsibility; it is likely Blue Beetle will become a recurring character in future movies of the DCU, and he will impact the development of stories in a similar fashion in which Tony Stark/Iron-man was a major guide and influence throughout most of the MCU (even after his death).
On the other hand, Superman: Legacy will not arrive until 2025. We don’t know much about the movie besides the fact that it will portray the life of a young Superman and his early stages in Metropolis. It is an intriguing take on the “strongest man alive”; seeing such big names in their beginning (with no mentors, unlike the next generations) could be a refreshing experience.
With this new information, the new DCU starts taking shape. Let’s hope for all the best and creates an astounding and lasting quality franchise.
