Meryl Streep And Jennifer Lawrence Among 1000 Actors Signing Letter To SAG-AFTRA Leadership, Threatening To Strike
Amid the ongoing WGA Strike, more discontent is brewing in Hollywood. Members of the Screen Actors Guild sent a letter to SAG-AFTRA leadership indicating their willingness to strike to make sure their demands are heard. The letter reads in part, “We hope you’ve heard the message from us: This is an unprecedented inflection point in our industry, and what might be considered a good deal in any other years is simply not enough. We feel that our wages, our craft, our creative freedom, and the power of our union have all been undermined in the last decade. We need to reverse those trajectories.”
The Guild brought up concerns with minimum pay, residuals that reflect the streaming environment, healthcare, pensions, and self-tape regulation. Another main concern among professional actors is the rise of AI and how it affects their careers. The union explained, “We do not believe that SAG-AFTRA members can afford to make halfway gains in anticipation that more will be coming in three years, and we think it is absolutely vital that this negotiation protects not just our likenesses, but makes sure we are well compensated when any of our work is used to train AI.”

Over 1,000 A-list actors, including Jennifer Lawerence, Meryl Streep, Neil Patrick Harris, and Rami Malek, signed the letter to show their willingness to strike and their support for their fellow actors. Guild President Fran Drescher signed her name to the letter, which marked a major shift, as she is in the leadership position of negotiating with the AMPTP with the aid of chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. This confluence of strikes would up the stakes and could force Hollywood studios to make a move to bring a quick end to the strikes.
