James Corden Was Almost One Of The Most Iconic Characters In 'Lord Of The Rings'

With the announcement that he is departing his Late Late Show in the spring, James Corden sat for an interview before a crowd with writer Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast. During the interview, he revealed some of his audition history to Horowitz.

It turns out, one of his first auditions was for Samwise Gamgee in the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy, along with all of London. “Everyone, every single person in London auditioned for The Lord of the Rings. Everybody,” Corden told Horowitz. His audition, according to what he told Horowitz, did not go well. Corden told Horowitz that he and three friends auditioned, and received callbacks for the next day, but after that, nothing.

He seemed to be remiss to not have landed the role, though it was not as if that was his only shot in Hollywood. James Corden has had no lack of success in his life, landing roles as an actor and voice actor in movies such as Into the Woods and Ocean’s Eight. Corden did express his admiration for the movies and their adaptation of the source material, except for the last one, where he stated that he felt like he’d seen this before. It’s unclear if he’s referring to The Battle of the Five Armies or The Rings of Power.

James Corden’s currently executive producing and starring in Mammals, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in November.
