Helen Mirren Broke Her Finger During the Filming of 'Shazam: Fury of the Gods' In Stunts
The undisputable dame of Hollywood, Helen Mirren, broke one of her fingers while filming Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The actress had decided to handle her stunts independently without the aid of a double on set. She recently spoke about it on The Graham Norton Show: “I was incredibly brave and didn’t say anything or complain because I wanted to be a real stunty person.”
In the upcoming sequel (which arrives in theatres on March 17) Mirren is portraying the demigod Hespera. Describing what it was like to play the villain in the superhero film, Mirren commented: “We are angry goddesses wearing unbelievably heavy costumes. It was very hot and uncomfortable, and, in fact, Lucy (Liu) said at the end of the first day’s shooting, ‘They are trying to kill us,’ in all seriousness.”

As for why the 77-year-old actress signed on to the sequel, she said it was from her love of the first film; “It was sweet and funny. I am not a big superhero type person, but I loved the idea of it and happily signed up for the second one.” David F. Sandberg directed the film and described working with Mirren and Liu as a “dream”; “We aimed high when we cast the movie, and we got exactly what we wanted.”
Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens in theatres on March 17.
