Shinji Mikami, Legendary Designer of 'Resident Evil' and Known For Work on 'Hi-Fi Rush,' Will Leave Tango Gameworks After Founding It 12 Years Ago
Famed Japanese game designer Shinji Mikami will be leaving Tango Gameworks. Having founded the studio in March 2010, Mikami has helped bring the world games such as The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo.
The legendary game designer first started at Capcom, working on SNES games such as 1993’s Goof Troop before becoming director of Resident Evil. The horror franchise became a success from the off, so while Mikami would work on other games such as Dino Crisis and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, he would always be overseeing the next Resident Evil. After leaving Capcom, he spent over five years as a freelancer until founding Tango Gameworks.

Now, with Hi-Fi Rush released, it has been announced that Mikami will be leaving Tango Gameworks in the coming months. The news first broke in a company-wide ZeniMax email, in which Todd Vaughn, senior vice president of development at Bethesda, shared a statement. True Achievements had access to that email, revealing that Vaughn had credited Mikami as being “a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers at Tango for 12 years”.
A tweet from Bethesda confirmed the news publicly, thanking Mikami for his work at the company and wishing him well for his future, which has not yet been revealed. Whether Mikami is retiring from game development after more than 30 years in the industry will likely be a mystery until his leaving day. Though with what he has given the gaming world, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him leaving on a high.
