Gen X and Millennial kids had arguably some of the best Disney animated films to grow up with. In recent years Disney has breathed new life into our animated classics with live-action renditions that have invited a whole new generation to fall in love with timeless characters telling lovely stories with the happily ever after trope that quite frankly the world really needs these days. The latest animated tale to get an update and a live-action feature film is The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey as the titular character, Ariel.

Disney released a new teaser trailer this week inviting fans into Ariel’s world under the sea, with Bailey’s beautiful vocals spotlighted as she sings “Part of Your World.” The song choice is fitting as the trailer shows us the world in which Ariel lives. We get an introduction to Prince Eric played by Jonah Hauer-King with a glimpse of Ursula as well, played by Melissa McCarthy; the camera focuses on just her shadow-covered face at the very end. As the trailer fades out fans hear Ursula’s trademark sinister laugh. Additionally, King Titan will be played by Javier Bardem with the voice talents of Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.

The music in the original film can only be described as iconic. Fans need not worry though as composer Alan Menken who wrote the original score returned as a collaborative partner. Lin-Manuel Miranda joined him on the project. Miranda is known for his work on Moana, Encanto, and of course, Hamilton just to name a few. Menken and Miranda wrote four new songs for the film but reassure fans that favorites such as “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea” will be included as well.

Representation matters in all aspects of entertainment. One area where we love to see representation is in the Disney Princess franchise. In an interview with Variety, Bailey recounted a conversation she had with her grandparents just after the first teaser trailer dropped in September of 2022. “It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you.’”

The Little Mermaid is expected to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023!
