More Details On The Next 'Star Wars' Movie Could Be Revealed At Star Wars Celebration Europe In April

Lucasfilm's focus in recent years has undoubtedly been on the small screen. After the lacklustre performances of Solo and The Rise of Skywalker, Disney's then and now CEO Bob Iger announced a pause on future Star Wars films. And while the Star Wars shows on Disney+ have been tremendously popular, the company struggles to bring the saga back to where it started.

Unlike Marvel, Lucasfilm tends to announce collaborations with certain writers and/or directors instead of specific titles or synopsis, like the mysterious Star Wars film by Taika Waititi. Planned to come out in December of this year, the current status of this project is unknown. And more often than not, Lucasfilm months later announced that it has parted ways with these writers/directors for various reasons and that the respective project was no longer in pursuit.

This hesitancy - and for fans, quite frustrating - approach seems to stem from a deep fear of failing a fandom that has become overly sceptical again and the urge to "get it right this time”. Without official statements from Lucasfilm, respectable media outlets like The Hollywood Reporter or Variety have revealed various reports and rumors about future Star Wars projects for the big screen in recent months that were neither confirmed nor denied by Lucasfilm.

But now it seems the company has big plans for the upcoming Star Wars Celebration in London. As Iger's cost-cutting measures appear to hit Marvel harder than Lucasfilm, the old and new head of the mouse-house urges Lucasfilm's CEO Kathleen Kennedy to finally unveil her plans for future Star Wars films.

And while Rian Johnson's trilogy, announced even before the release of The Last Jedi in 2017, may never see the light of day, Patty Jenkin's Rogue Squadron in a limbus and Waititi's film likely years away, a Star Wars film that hasn't even been officially revealed might be the first to hit theatres: Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain) are reportedly writing the script for a film set post Episode IX, without being a direct continuation of The Rise of Skywalker. Characters from the Sequel Trilogy may appear but won't be the main focus. Reportedly directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), shooting could begin as early as this April or May. If true, this could be the film to fill the December 2023 spot that Disney has reserved for the next Star Wars movie (the other being December 2027 - maybe for Waititi).

Among the other Star Wars projects reportedly in various stages of pre-production is a film written by Michael Waldron (Loki) and directed or at least produced by Kevin Feige and a movie directed by Shawn Levy after he finished his work on Deadpool 3. All these rumors would justify more than one panel at Star Wars Celebration, but with four days, there is certainly enough time for more than one big announcement.

A preliminary schedule for the April 7-10 event could be released any day now.
