Wednesday’s episode of The Flash, titled “Hear No Evil” promised to explain everything about the new character Danielle Panabaker is playing in the show’s final season. And it certainly was a surprise. So, spoilers ahead.

The person who emerged from the chamber, neither Caitlin nor Frost, is basically a blank slate with no memory of her own. But Caitlin isn’t a suppressed person within like Frost was, or like she would be when they still shared a body and functioned in shifts. She’s officially gone, and functionally dead. An OG member of Team Flash is dead. While this was the most likely scenario (where else could Caitlin have gone?), it’s still quite a shock. What a ride it had been for the character to be essentially killed offscreen.

However, there was still a chance that either Frost or Caitlin be brought back through some rewiring of the machine and the brainwaves, and an imprint or map of Caitlin’s mind, as the process would kill the other. It’s a very Tuvix situation, but with an outcome of two deaths instead of two survivors. She refuses to go back into the CRC, choosing herself to live because Caitlin made her choice. And she’s also found her name: Khione, the name Caitlin’s father, Thomas Snow, had for the creation he intended. It’s kind of a lateral move, as it’s the Greek word for “snow”. Khione befriends Hartley Rathaway, the Pied Piper, who destroys the chamber on her behalf, permanently derailing the chances of Caitlin or Frost returning. It’s Hartley that’s the partner Khione ends up working with on her journey, as Mark/Chillblaine not only doesn’t trust Team Flash but now his love is gone and he’s pissed.

There was quite a bit that happened to surround these events, things that many would call foul when the characters should probably be grieving their fallen comrade, but showrunner Eric Wallace states that it’s a casualty of the shorter season. It’s unfortunate in the face of Frost last season getting “Funeral for a Friend” in Interlude III after her death. The Flash airs Wednesdays at 8 PM on The CW. The series finale is expected to air in May.
