The Memorial Day weekend four-day box office results are in, and performances were varied. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga made about $32.4 million domestically and $36.5 million internationally, totalling nearly $69 million overall. Furiosa faced some competition over its opening weekend, including The Garfield Movie, which was also released over the weekend, and Ryan Reynolds’ IF, which was released the weekend prior. While the Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) prequel scraped by as the top performer domestically, the overall revenue was less than expected for a holiday weekend release. This performance may not bode well for the immediate future of the franchise.

Mad Max: The Wasteland has been publicly discussed since 2015. The film, should it be developed, will be another prequel to Fury Road (2015), set a year prior and focused on Max. George Miller, the franchise creator, stated (via The Hollywood Reporter), “I’ll definitely wait to see how this [Furiosa] goes, before we even think about it.” While box office performance has fallen a bit short of expectation, critic and audience reception has been mostly positive, giving the future of the franchise an edge. Furiosa has only just begun its theatrical run, so the future is not set in stone; it is still important to note that a film’s opening weekend tends to be very important for its overall revenue.

The sci-fi media franchise Mad Max began in 1979. Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland version of Australia, the main story follows "Mad" Max Rockatansky after he gets revenge for his family and drifts, facing difficulties from pockets of the surviving population. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a prequel to Fury Road (2015), showing the origin story of the titular character, from her rough childhood to the death of her mother, her training, and her quest for revenge. The film can still be watched in theaters, and will most likely go to the streaming platform Max in the future. The rest of the Mad Max films can currently be streamed on Max.
