From 'The Rings Of Power' To The Royal Shakespeare Company, Lloyd Owen Takes To The Stage
Lloyd Owen, of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power fame, sat down with Variety to discuss David Edgar's upcoming political drama The New Real, which will debut at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) on October 3rd.
The play follows Rachel, an American political strategist, and Caro, her British data “whizz,” who have been hired to manage a fiercely embattled election. The team thinks they will teach the Eastern Europeans a thing or two about democracy, but things change when Rachel’s former political partner, Larry Yeates, takes up working for her opponent.
“I’m delighted to be returning to the Royal Shakespeare Company under the new artistic leadership of Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey. David Edgar is one of our greatest playwrights, and The New Real is a fantastic addition to all that has gone before,” Owen told the magazine.

Owen also noted the poignancy of the play’s debut in this current political climate, saying, “...couldn’t be more on the money, nor the RSC’s brilliant programming of this play in the lead-up to the Nov. 5 elections in the U.S.”
The New Real will be directed by Holly Race Rowan, who is the artistic director of Headlong with whom Owens is excited to work and how she “...has been on my radar for quite a while, so I am really excited to get into rehearsals with her and, indeed, the rest of our excellent cast.”
As to the upcoming second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which debuts on Prime Video on August 29, Owens revealed how he approached his character of Captain Elendil, saying, “How do we grow him from a simple ship’s captain to the leader of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men? This season once again puts those building blocks in place as he is asked to make impossible choices between his faith, his daughter, and his own life.”
