Game developer Eidos-Montreal confirmed via X, formerly known as Twitter, that they are laying off 97 employees. One repercussion of those layoffs has led to the cancellation of the next installment of the Deus Ex series. The X post stated: “The global economic context, the challenges of our industry, and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer have finally impacted our studio. The difficult decision has been made to let go 97 people from development teams, administration, and support services.” The series published Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 2016. Eidos-Montreal has been working on the follow-up game for two years, only to be halted.

The state of the economy post-pandemic has been financially harmful to the gaming industry. 2022 and 2023 saw over 10,000 layoffs. So far, January 2024 has experienced over 6,000 layoffs, indicating a record-breaking year ahead for laid-off employees. Eidos-Montreal was originally part of Square Enix Studio but was sold to Embracer Group in 2022. The deal was made for $300M, giving Embracer the rights to not just Deus Ex but also Tomb Raider and Thief. Embracer has been busy in recent years collecting studios and game properties. The news of layoffs appears to come on the heels of a $2B deal falling through with Savvy Games, a Saudi Arabian investment fund.
