'Doug' Sequel Series In The Works From Disney+
Creator Jim Jenkins has announced that there is a sequel in the works for the 90s animated series Doug, which initially premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991. The seven-season run of Doug was split between Nickelodeon and ABC, owned by Disney. Doug was first voiced by Billy West, best known for his many roles in Futurama and Bugs Bunny in the original Space Jam. Following the show’s transition to ABC, Doug was voiced by Thomas McHugh. After wrapping up with the film Doug’s 1st Movie in 1999, the show also had a video game tie-in and a stage adaptation.
Doug played an important role in the 90s lineup, alongside other successes like Rugrats, Pepper Ann, Ren & Stimpy (also starring Billy West), and Recess. In addition to Doug Funnie, the other main characters were his friends, Skeeter Valentine and Roger Klotz, and his big-time crush and later girlfriend, Patti Mayonnaise, voiced by Constance Shulman. This coming sequel, Doug Kids, is said to focus on Doug and Patti’s family, 20 years later, complete with kids named Yancey (Doug’s middle name) and Doug Jr. Doug Kids is still in development, but Disney has stamped its approval. Jenkins has released potential concept art and announced that the new introduction will be styled in the same way as the original show, with a plain white background.
