Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Talk About Behind-The-Scenes, Real-Life While Making ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’
Amazon Prime Video just released Mr. and Mrs. Smith - part remake and part reimagining of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 2005 movie with a twist on the original storyline. In Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the two play spies masquerading as a married couple. At first, Glover didn’t want to have any role in the remake but changed his mind after watching the original and realizing how important the chemistry between the leading characters truly is.
Jane Smith was originally going to be played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, but later was replaced by Maya Erskine. When asked about why Waller-Bridge left the project, Donald Glover commented that he didn’t know “if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.”

He felt like they were “two captains” trying to run the ship but didn’t feel like a show of this volume could have two captains with differing perspectives. Once Erskine joined the project, Glover felt the chemistry was finally there and the two clicked immediately.
Glover and Erskine recently discussed their confidence levels and what that means in a public profession like acting. Glover noted, “People are afraid that confidence is going to make them unlikable.” Erskine loves “the sense of the shared community of art” but doesn’t love the times that she has to talk as herself instead of a character, “because that’s where the self-consciousness comes.” Glover reminded her, “No one cares, but also we are representing. I represent something to people, and it took me a long time to accept that,” and later continued, “I’d much rather build something very deep with an audience because I actually love the audience. I love the dance we have together.”
The first season of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is available now on Amazon Prime Video.
