Disney Buys Massive Stake In Epic Games, Best Known For 'Fortnite', For $1.5 Billion
In a time when the video game industry is undergoing some turbulence, news came the other day of a massive move within the industry, especially while everyone waits with bated breath for the news Microsoft is planning for next week.
That move is Disney announcing a massive, $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games. Epic Games is the studio behind the hugely popular Fortnite, the Gears of War franchise, and the industry-leading development engine Unreal Engine. Disney has worked with Epic before in the capacity of player skins for Fortnite from franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

This new partnership has the aim of creating a new expansive universe that “interoperates” with Fortnite. A conceptual image was released to visualize their concept. Words like “persistent” and “open” describe the ecosystem they envision with the Fortnite community.
Aside from the public-relations-esque language used on the earnings call, in which Disney revealed they did better than expected on earnings, no other details about the upcoming partnership were provided. IGN suspects that it will work similarly to the recent LEGO: Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival, being within the game but separate from the popular battle royale.
