In the wake of the shellacking the video game industry has undergone over the last year-and-a-half, small studios have been forming and growing out of the ashes.

Devolver Digital, the studio behind the popular cozy game Cult of the Lamb, is one studio that is taking the initiative in the new landscape of the video game industry and forming a publishing label. This new label will focus on bringing IPs in the comic book, TV, and movie realm to the world of gaming.

The new label will be called Big Fan Games, and its general manager will be gaming industry veteran Lincoln Hershberger. Hershberger has worked at Westwood Studios, EA, and Twitch and has worked in the industry for nearly three decades. He’ll be joined by Amanda Kruse, a TV and movie veteran with experience in movies like La La Land, The Hunger Games, and Twilight. She also has experience in the gaming world, having formed Lionsgate Studios’ gaming division.

Kruse likens Big Fan Games to a SWAT team. Everyone is specialized, but they all work together. If one of them is on a call with a developer or another publisher, they all will be. She’s big on adaptations, it seems, and they’ll work with all the brands out there, but they would much rather prefer to work with IPs that do not have an active show or movie in development because they bring flexibility. Part of it comes from the fact that the spotlight would be on them, then, rather than a TV show or a movie.

Big Fan Games has about six projects in development at this time, with an aim for about four game launches a year. That’s a tall order, but Kruse and Hershberger seem up to the challenge.
