Details About 'Joker 2' Emerge
In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix wowed fans with his portrayal of the Joker’s descent into villainy. Now, Phoenix is teaming up with his Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga, in Joker: Folie à Deux.” Members of director Todd Phiilips’ team told Variety that the film would be similar to a jukebox musical. A jukebox musical takes popular songs and weaves them into a story like in the Broadway hits Mama Mia or Jersey Boys. The first hint of the film’s musical nature was the reveal trailer of Lady Gaga set to the Fred Astaire Classic “Cheek to Cheek.”
To bring the music in line with the film’s darker tones, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, who won an Oscar for her work on the first film, will “infuse her distinctive haunting cues” into the soundtrack. The film will include at least 15 popular songs reinterpreted to fit the story. The only confirmed song so far is “That’s Entertainment” from 1953’s Band Wagon starring Judy Garland. The team indicated they would leave the opportunity for an original song or two on the table. Other details about the film are scarce as the only synopsis so far describes the film as a drama set in and around Arkham Asylum. Joker: Folie à Deux comes to theaters on October 4.
