Steven Moffat Returns To 'Doctor Who' With A New Episode For Ncuti Gatwa's First Season

The 14th series of Doctor Who will premiere with two episodes on May 11 on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer in the U.K. Some promotional materials may list this as a premiere “season one,” likely due to how Disney wants to market the show to its international audiences.
Doctor Who fans were first introduced to the new Fifteenth Doctor, played by Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, during the November 2023 anniversary specials. In the 2023 Christmas episode, “The Church on Ruby Road,” Gatwa first meets his companion Ruby, played by Millie Gibson. Not only is Gatwa the first actor born outside of the U.K. to play the Doctor, but he also made history as the first openly queer and the first black actor in the famous role.

This season’s eight episodes will be directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Writers already revealed for this season include Russell T. Davies, Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and Steven Moffat. Having both Davies and Moffat returning to Doctor Who is amazing and will likely bring fans back to the show who may have felt out of touch with it in recent years! In the past, Steven Moffat harped on never returning to Doctor Who, having served multiple seasons as a writer from 2005-2017 and then as the showrunner from 2010-2017.
Moffat wrote some of the most popular episodes of this era and is responsible for creating the iconic Weeping Angels, as seen in his episodes “Blink,” “The Angels Take Manhattan,” and “The Time of Angels.” The last Doctor Who episode Moffat wrote was the 2017 Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time.”

It has already been announced that Steven Moffat will write the third episode, directed by Julie Anne Robinson. Moffat is notably excited to be “working with old friends and a brand new Doctor” and simply “couldn’t be happier.” When asked by Robinson for a one-word description of the new episode, he replied with “Hitchcock.” Based on the series trailer, a decent part of this episode will likely feature the Doctor frozen on an active landmine. Fans have speculated that the setting may be a war zone in the far-off future, such as with previous Moffat-scripted episodes “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone.” With suspense and thrills on the horizon, we can’t wait to see what is next in store for Doctor Who this year!
