The second season of The Rings of Power has begun in earnest! As part of their show coverage, Nerdist’s Michael Walsh sat down with actor Daniel Weyman to explore his role as the Stranger. This mysterious character was revealed to be one of Tolkien’s five wizards at the end of Season 1, and will continue to play a role in Season 2, but which wizard is he?

The short answer is that Weyman isn’t telling. In the extensive interview, the actor resists requests to confirm his character is Mithrandir, better known to many as Gandalf, and to state if he believes him to be that character. Instead, Weyman focuses a lot more on the thought process behind the character, and how he was portrayed in Season 1.

On the topic of Season 2 however, Weyman does provide some greater hints. The Stranger sets off with Nori at the end of Season 1 to continue his journey, but the actor uses the metaphor of transitioning from a forest to a desert to explore the Stranger’s mindset. This magical being had assumed the trip’s hardest parts had already passed, but now running low on food, possibly being followed, and plagued with troubling dreams, he is starting to struggle.

Weyman also spoke with delight about playing the Stranger opposite Tom Bombadil, portrayed by Rory Kinnear. As a fan of the world of Tolkien, the actor found the experience extremely thrilling and hinted at the stark differences between his character and Kinnear’s. He implies that through meeting Tom, the Stranger will come to understand there is another level of being he has to become more aware of, different from the existing learning he’s been doing regarding the common facts of a normal life.

It will be fascinating to see if, much like Season 1, Season 2 ends with another big reveal regarding the Stranger, and what that could mean for the series. Regardless, we here at CultureSlate are excited to see how the role unfolds in upcoming episodes of the show!
