'Cyberpunk Edgerunners' Will Not Receive A Second Season According To A Producer

Created as an animated collaboration between Studio TRIGGER (Promare, Kill la Kill, Star Wars: Visions) and CD Projekt Red (The Witcher Series, Cyberpunk 2077), the ten-episode run of Cyberpunk Edgerunners dropped on Netflix this September to find itself a runaway success.

Edgerunners has attained one of the highest review scores on Netflix, sat in the streaming platform's global top ten for over a month since its release, and boosted the ailing player base for CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077 with its popularity. However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed no current plans for a second season exist. In an interview with the Japanese publication Famitsu, Satoru Honma- the Japan country manager for CD Projekt Red- explained why a new season would not be in development when he was asked about the prospect of a series continuation in the wake of such success.

“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback,” Honma said.

Honma further went on to clarify, “However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’.

“Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”

Cyberpunk Edgerunners is unlikely to be the last of CD Projekt Red's forays into Japanese animation. However, for the time being, there are evidently no plans currently in place- with Studio TRIGGER, or any other animation studios besides- for further series exploring the potential stories within the Cyberpunk universe.
