It’s been a wild ride for CD Projekt Red over the last decade. They skyrocketed to prominence after the release of The Witcher 3, introduced an exciting yet obscure game called Cyberpunk 2077, and then when it was released, it was one of the worst launches in gaming history. The game was so broken on PS4 consoles that Sony removed it from their digital marketplace. Lawsuits were initiated, claiming CDPR had deliberately misled consumers and shareholders.

But they atoned and promised to right the wrongs, and set to work on improving the game they had spent the better part of a decade developing. Performance and gameplay improved, and then recently they launched the first and only DLC for the game: Phantom Liberty. Now, sales data shows that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed The Witcher 3.

During the company’s Investor Day presentation, President and CEO Adam Kiciński revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 has outpaced more units sold than The Witcher 3 for a total of 25 million. Five million of those came from September alone, boosted by the prospects of the new DLC, which has sold more than 3 million units itself in the first week. This milestone was reached within two years and 10 months, whereas this same number was reached by The Witcher 3 after about four-and-a-half years. By December of 2019, The Witcher 3 had sold around 28 million units.

The majority of units sold were on PC, with around 68%, followed by PS5, and then the Xbox Series X and S. Phantom Liberty, the first and only expansion for the game, is out now, alongside a major update to the game that completely reforms the game and adds new features.
