Could Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ Be In Trouble?
James Cameron has shown that if you spend your money on a passion project under your own terms and with the technology you want in your movie, even if it doesn’t exist yet, you will get over $1.5 billion in box office draw. But news out of Atlanta, Francis Ford Coppola is giving us a glimpse of what happens and how doing things your own way and under your own dollar could be a bad thing as reports of his latest movie, Megalopolis, is apparently over budget already halfway through filming and turmoil amongst the crew with many being fired by the director.
In an exclusive report with The Hollywood Reporter, multiple sources are saying that the iconic director’s latest film is in “chaos,” with most of the creative team from production design and art direction being fired, as well as the entire visual effects crew also being removed in early December. In addition, the director appears to be dissatisfied with the look and feel of the movie, which is a sci-fi epic centering around the rebuild of New York following a disaster, with Coppola attempting to use new immersive technology like Disney uses now in their Star Wars productions like The Mandolorian and Kenobi but learning it comes at a cost to which he now wants to move back to traditional effects (meaning cheaper). This decision does make sense when you consider Coppola is financing this movie all on his own.

Coppola is no stranger to being behind difficult shoots, but they get results. Apocalypse Now is an example of how internal struggles lead to results, and Coppola despises the whole studio system and insists on making films this way. In March of 2022, he said, “There’s a certain way everyone thinks a film should be, and it rubs against the grain if you have another idea. People can be very unaccepting, but sometimes the other idea represents what’s coming in the future. That is worthy of being considered.” Despite not having anyone to assist in the film’s visual style, which features heavyweight actors like Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, and Dustin Hoffman, Coppola will be moving forward and is expected to hire new staff in the coming week.
