'The Acolyte' Didn't Perform Well Enough For Disney To Renew It For A Season 2

Thanks to an article from Vulture, fans of The Acolyte are getting an answer on why Disney did not renew the show for a second season.

It ultimately comes down to the degree of success required for Disney to feel justified in renewing it. Disney Entertainment’s co-chair Alan Bergman stated that they were happy with its performance, but it “wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a Season 2. So that’s the reason why we didn’t [renew it].”

This may disappoint or annoy many, as the show was successful by the metrics currently available to the public. For instance, Nielsen had the series’ debut in its Top Ten for two weeks before it fell out, returning to the chart at #10 in its finale episode.

However, it is important to underline the apparent cost of this show, at some 180 million dollars, making it one of the more expensive on the streaming service, behind Andor Season 1’s astronomical $250 million budget. Neither of these sums included advertising, so in the end, Disney probably had a nearly 200 million dollar show released to the public. To justify its continuation, The Acolyte likely had to do spectacularly, and it unfortunately did not. Even if Nielsen is generally accurate or if it is representative of viewership, this was a show that didn’t stay in the top ten for longer than a few weeks.

Despite this bad news, the interview did contain the tidbit that other live-action series are in development at Lucasfilm. We will likely get more news or hints on this front at Celebration Japan in 2025. For the time being, though, the chapter of The Acolyte is seemingly going to remain closed at Disney.
