For the last two years, Microsoft has held a gaming showcase event in January. Well-informed sources within the industry expect another Developer Direct in the first month of 2025.

Tom Warren of The Verge wrote on Bluesky, “Feels like Microsoft has finally hit a good cadence with Xbox Game Pass releases, especially with recent drops like Indiana Jones and what’s ahead in 2025. Avowed, South of Midnight, Doom, Towerborne, Fable, Outer Worlds 2, and more are coming next year. I’m also expecting an Xbox event in January.” Warren isn’t the only who is expecting a Developer Direct early next year, as Jez Corden of Windows Central said before The Game Awards that Microsoft wouldn’t have many announcements at the event, “pending Xbox’s own dev direct in Q1.”

If the event in 2025 follows the same format as previous years, there will be four games featured across the hour it runs for. With a potential extra game beyond that hour. Games that Warren mentioned, such as South of Midnight and Fable, are likely to feature in the 2025 event, with the developers of those games showing them off. In recent times, Microsoft executives have said their first-party games are all likely to be released on other platforms at some point. Platform releases beyond Xbox are unlikely to be mentioned in this Developer Direct unless such information is already known.
