“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

J. Robert Oppenheimer

Actor Cillian Murphy will lead the upcoming drama, Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan and based on the late theoretical scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “Father of the Atomic Bomb” and his role in its development. This is the actor’s most prominent role, having starred in several of Nolan’s films before, including the Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk.

Murphy did not join his cast mates for meals because of the enormous weight of the role he felt as someone who is, as some might say, a controversial historical figure. As he recently told People Magazine, “You know that when you have those big roles, that responsibility, you feel it’s kind of overwhelming”.

Murphy’s cast mates were supportive of his need for solitude off the set. Murphy’s co-stars, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon, spoke in support of Murphy’s absence. Murphy did not attend because “the sheer volume of what he had to take on and shoulder is so monumental,” says Blunt.

“Of course, he didn’t want to come and have dinner with us,” Damon said. “He couldn’t. His brain was just too full.”

The movie, Oppenheimer, opens in theaters on July 21, 2023.
