'Indiana Jones 5' Knocked Out Of First Place At Box Office
Having sat atop the domestic box office charts for just one week, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has dropped into second place, with Insidious: The Red Door taking the top spot during the weekend of July 7.
The latest Indiana Jones film has fallen a bit short of expectations, with its opening weekend domestic total just about entering the projected $60-65 million range at $60.3 million. This second weekend saw a 56% drop from the first, raking in just $26.5 million. The Red Door, the latest Insidious film, had an opening weekend of $32.6 million. That total has already seen it break even from its reported production budget of $16 million. The Dial of Destiny seems less likely to break even.
At a reported $295 million production budget, The Dial of Destiny needs at least $750 million just to break even. At present, the domestic gross sits at $121.2 million, but with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One around the corner, another high drop in weekend gross seems likely for the whip-cracking archaeologist’s latest. While it is still too early to call Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny a failure, it seems destined to be anything but a success.
