Fans of Chris Sanders's projects such as The Croods and How to Train Your Dragon are ecstatic to learn that the filmmaker is returning to DreamWorks Animation for the film, The Wild Robot. The animated film is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling book by the same name, written by Peter Brown and published in 2016. Sanders wrote the script and is directing the film. The story follows Rozzum 7134 who goes simply by Roz and serves as the main protagonist. After washing up on a seemingly uninhabited island she embarks on an adventure of survival for herself as well as the family that she creates.

The official synopsis states that this story is “a tale of survival and discovery [that] begins when [Roz] becomes the unexpected protector to an orphaned gosling, which she names Brightbill. Together they struggle to survive the harsh environment but only succeed with the help of a close-knit group of misfit animals, who become first friends, then family. Ultimately Roz and company save the island from a robot invasion by Roz’s manufacturer, looking to bring her back to civilization by any means necessary.” The synopsis goes on to say that the plot “tells an emotional story about how we all have the power to ‘exceed our programming,’ to become more than we were destined to be. Roz not only finds a way to survive in this dangerous world but also brings new meaning to her ‘life’ by taking on the responsibility of parenthood. The movie celebrates what it means to be wild and alive, and how cooperation is the key to survival in a harsh world.”

Other credits to Sanders’ name include a long run with Disney in films such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, and Lilo & Stitch. The writer/director still voices Stitch to this day. In 2019, Sanders made a live-action adaptation of Call of the Wild, starring none other than Harrison Ford. Unfortunately, timing was not on the side of filmmakers during that time of release due to the start of the pandemic. There is not yet a release date for The Wild Robot, but based on Chris Sanders’ creative history it is sure to delight fans of all ages when it does debut.
