Disney’s VFX workers voted unanimously to unionize through the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). Disney’s in-house VFX workers filed for said unionization through the NLRB – National Labor Relations Board on August 28. Votes were cast through a mail-in ballot system between September 8 and September 28. 13 votes were received out of the 18 employees in the division. All voted in favor of unionizing.  Disney’s in-house division is the second VFX crew to vote toward unionizing following closely behind Marvel Studios’ visual effects department. The visual effects team at Disney appears to have similar demands to Marvel – fair compensation, that is representative of the hours they put into their work as well as benefits.

Disney’s VFX crew’s work includes the live-action remakes of Disney’s classic animated films. The Little Mermaid was the most recent to get a live-action update. Other films have included Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, Pinocchio, and The Lion King. Some live-action versions give audiences alternative perspectives on the classics, such as Maleficent and Cruella. IATSE’s VFX organizer Mark Patch said in a statement, “Today’s unanimous victory shows that VFX workers everywhere have a clear path to winning a meaningful say about their working conditions and quality of life. We’ll be continuing our work to win a great contract, but we need to bring every studio and vendor in line to bring those union standards to all VFX workers.”

VFX senior coordinator, Mack Robinson said “For so long we’ve wanted the same protections as everyone else, but there was no hope in sight. Winning this election was a long fight, but I’m proud to say it’s been won by each and every VFX worker wanting a brighter, sustainable future.” Negotiation dates between Disney and the VFX workers have not been scheduled yet. VFX workers plan to work with Disney to negotiate agreeable terms for both parties.
