Blizzard Games have announced June 6th 2023 as the release date for Diablo IV, the next instalment in their hit Diablo franchise. This news was revealed during the 2022 Game Awards, accompanied by a brief trailer teasing things to come.

The trailer, clocking in at a short three minutes, showed an army of heavily-armoured soldiers marching into the Burning Hells, led by a bald monk-like woman. As the legion is attacked by a horde of demons, an angel appears, routing the demons with blasts of light, until he spots a horned woman, whom he calls ‘Lilith’, flying after her right before the trailer ends.

Whilst the trailer did not provide much in the way of plot or story, die-hard Diablo fans were quick to point out that Lilith is the Daughter of Mephisto (the ‘Prime Evil’ Demon Lord of Hatred) and co-progenitor of the Nephalem and the human race. This has led to further speculation that the angel seen in the trailer is Inarius, Lilith's former lover and fellow creator of the Nephalem.

Much of the game's plot and the story are being kept under wraps. What is known however is that the game will be moving away from the more colourful aesthetic and styles introduced in Diablo III, in favour of more infernal aesthetics from earlier Diablo titles. The developers have also promised a darker and gloomier, with the game taking place years after Diablo III, in a Sanctuary where “millions have been slaughtered by the actions of the High Heavens and Burning Hells alike”.

On top of the trailer, the release date was accompanied by a guest appearance from pop singer Halsey, who treated audiences to a live performance of her song 'Lilith' and teased a collaboration between herself and Blizzard Games.

What could the two parties have planned? Either way, this release date has given many fans peace of mind, and with such hype and glowing previews, Diablo IV is looking to be one hell of a game.

Diablo IV is set for a June 6th 2023 release date for console and PC. Pre-purchase early access to the open beta can be found on the Diablo IV website.
