Bethesda Studios Thought They Were Untouchable Prior To 'Fallout 76'
No matter how successful one person or company is or can be, there is still the chance of being subject to change and potential error. Bethesda Studios is now one of these companies facing the consequences of being “caught up in their own hubris”.
According to IGN, the game’s developer Bruce Nesmith was “on a hot streak” with the releases of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4. Unfortunately, Fallout 76’s release in 2018 broke the “hot streak” as the studio's first foray into multiplayer and fell victim to “scathing reviews”. One review stated, “The rich wasteland map of Fallout 76 is wasted on a mess of bugs, conflicting ideas, and monotony.”

The review appears to be a mirror of how Nesmith viewed Fallout 76. The belief of being able to do no wrong in creating a multiplayer game with the same formula as the Fallout series might have done well if Nesmith hadn’t “struggled [to warm up to]”. In his words, marketing’s focus was off-center and the company’s aim for the game’s release did not translate to success.
On the bright side, Fallout 76 is undergoing “a resurgence” since the flop of its release. Nonetheless, Bethesda continued to support the Fallout game with regular updates and expansions.
For fans not interested in Fallout 76, the latest installment, Fallout 5, won't arrive until after The Elder Scrolls 6, which isn't set to be released until 2028 at the earliest. In the meantime, it’s time to fall in love with Fallout all over again and immerse oneself in the landscape all over again.
