The video game industry is in an interesting state of flux. Amid an ongoing slew of massive layoffs from studio to studio, despite some good reports and acquisitions, new studios are forming and 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated years in gaming.

2025’s roster just expanded as well, with the anticipated Avowed now coming in February.

On Saturday, Xbox tweeted out a statement that they were delaying the release of the game until February 18 to give players’ “backlogs some breathing room.” Avowed was supposed to release sometime this fall, but no date was specified.

Giving backlogs a bit of breathing room is clearly just a funny marketing ploy. This was probably the goal all along. It’s highly unlikely that a company cares that much about how much is on a player’s backlog. They may care about competing with another launch day. Looking ahead at the release list for the fall, the largest game it would have to compete with would be Assassin’s Creed: Shadows in November.

It could also be a sign that Microsoft is, like other studios and publishers lately, still trying to figure out how to balance their books amid their claims that their financials are not looking great. It’s the claim behind the layoffs, alongside assurances that they did everything they could to stave off these cuts. By delaying Avowed, they are likely trying to spread out their catalog and distribute the benefits from their releases.
